I have chosen to do my research simulation on teaching social emotional skills to preschoolers. I don't know if it is a passion or a pet peeve. But it drives me crazy seeing teachers demand that a child know how to solve a social conflict when they have no idea how to do that. Then the teacher gets upset and decides to solve the problem herself and no one gets anything out of the experience!!
there seems to be tons of information on how important it is for chidlren to learn social skills, but very little on how teachers are suppose to teach them. It seems to be one of those things that people assume you just know. NOT TRUE!!
This is a fun activity we do in class. I put mirrors on the table along with some picture cards of children showing various emotions. I ask my children to identify what they think the child in the picture is feeling, see if they can make that face in the mirror and we ask questions like have you ever felt that way? Can you tell me about a time when you felt that way?...Children love looking at themselves in the mirror and this is a great way to help them learn about feelings they are having but don't know how to label!
